The Alemannia German Society of Charlotte was established in 1975!
At that time in Charlotte there were fewer companies from German-speaking countries and even fewer German speakers. The city itself also looked quite different. In 1982 there were only two skyscrapers, but by 2010 there were twenty-six and Charlotte’s population is steadily climbing. Thanks to the tireless efforts and constant work of the Alemannia Society’s volunteers, our membership is growing, too!
The launch of a German Society in Charlotte in 1975 is closely related to the then-newly formed Deutsche Schule Charlotte, which was founded one year earlier. Spirit und purpose of the Society was to promote the German language and culture within the Charlotte area. Seven initial directors registered the Alemannia, Inc. with the Secretary of State in North Carolina one day before Christmas and Renate Sielemann was appointed first president. Across the years the numerous events and activities for the benefit of our members, sponsors and friends have resulted many times in new contacts and strengthened social and business networks. The Society spared neither trouble nor expense for gala nights and that is how it came that for the purpose of the German-American exchange also German bands were invited to play in Charlotte. Such as the “Krefeld Fanfarenkorps” for our Wine Festival in 1986. By the way, Krefeld, also called the “Velvet and Silk City”, is the city sister of Charlotte in Germany.
Believe it or not, but all corresponsdence, invitations and also the Alemannia-Anzeiger (Journal) were handed out hand-written and it was not until the late 80’s and early 90’s that the computer came into play.
However, something has not changed at all: the commitment and dedication of the Board, who, then and now, planned and conducted a great number of events and activities for their members and friends. Many glamorous Feasts have been held, such as the 35th Anniversary of the Alemannia in 2010. This special event was duly celebrated in conjunction with our Annual General Meeting in the Hilton Charlotte Executive Park Hotel.
